We at the For Freedom’s Sake blog want to take this opportunity to congratulate President Barack Obama on his inauguration as the nation’s first African-American president. This is truly a historic event and one that deserves the focus and pause of the whole nation to give thanks for the implications of this inaugural celebration. We celebrate with you Mr. President this is truly your day and we hope that you enjoy every moment.
In light of this historic event, it should never be forgotten that at the founding of this country the principle that “…all men were created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” was immediately trashed by ignoring the issue of slavery.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice clearly articulated this “birth defect” in comments to “The Washington Times,” on March 28, 2008, when she said:
“Black Americans were a founding population, Africans and Europeans came here and founded this country together – Europeans by choice and Africans in chains. That’s not a very pretty reality of our founding…That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today.”
We should never forget this legacy or trivialize it in an effort to appease our national conscience. What must be done now and to be more specific what President Obama has been elected to do is to apply this great truth of equality to all citizens and to secure our unalienable rights – the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To do this he must begin by reining in the federal government and recognizing its constitutional limitations.
As we congratulate our new President and wish him well, we do so with the hope that he will honor and bind himself to the principles of limited government as spelled out in our Constitution. [We will explore these limitations in future blogs] This is where our liberties have been and will continue to be guarded. It is this document that separates the United States from all others and which has secured freedom for all. The biggest challenge facing the President will be to resist consolidating power under the federal government, squashing the rights retained by the people and socializing the economy. Unfortunately this process has accelerated under the outgoing administration. Let’s hope that it ends with the Obama administration. For Freedom’s Sake!
